How to make EM-5
EM-5 is used to deter pests. This is an all-natural concoction that can be made by anyone and is in no way harmful to humans or animals. It combines water, EM-1, a distilled spirit, molasses, and vinegar. The most successful programs with EM-5 involve alternating its applications with EM-A and EM-FPE. EM-5 is effective for reducing pest populations because EM-5 contains esters formed by mixing acetic acid and alcohol, which provokes intestinal intoxication. Since it is a version of EM-A, EM-5 also works on the basis of competitive exclusion.
What you will need:
- A clean airtight plastic bottle or container or large tank with lid*
- EM-1
- Sugar Cane Molasses
- Fermentation vinegar (use fruit- or wine vinegar, 6%)
- Water (use good water, preferably activated with EM-X ceramics)
- Cloves of garlic
- Chili pods
- Distilled alcohol 40 vol. % (use vodka, whiskey, tequila)
- A funnel
- A measuring cup and spoon
- pH paper to check pH
Fermentation aids include a non-metallic heating rod and a airlock.
*Please wash container thoroughly and do not use a glass bottle or container to avoid rupturing the container caused by gas production during the fermentation process. You can use one of the fermenters from our onlineshop.
If you want to keep it really simple, you may use a clean soda bottle with a screw on top. These bottles are very good because they can take a tremendous amount of pressure and can be found virtually anywhere.
Recipe:
10 % EM-1
10 % Sugar cane molasses
10 % Fermentation vinegar
60 % Water
Add approx. 7 medium-sized cloves of garlic and 7 chili pods for 10 l.
Following successful fermentation, when there is no more gas, add
10% Alcohol (40 vol. %)
Example to make 1 litre of EM-5:
100 ml EM-1
100 ml Sugar cane molasses
100 ml Fermentation vinegar
600 ml Water
1 Garlic clove
1 Chili pod
Following successful fermentation, when there is no more gas, add
100 ml Alcohol (40 vol. %)
Example to make 10 litres of EM-5:
1 l EM-1
1 l Sugar cane molasses
1 l Fermentation vinegar
6 l Water
7 Garlic clove
7 Chili pods
Following successful fermentation, when there is no more gas, add
1 l Alcohol (40 vol. %)

Instructions:
- Fill the molasses with some hot water (approx. 60-80°C) and the remaining water (total approx. 40°C) into the plastic container (with airlock), which must be airtight sealed
- Add vinegar and EM-1 and allow to ferment at 32-34°C until there is no more gas
- Following successful fermentation add 10% alcohol (40 vol. %)
- EM-5 has a sweet-sour aroma (ester/alcohol)
- EM-5 should be stored in a dark, cool place at uniform temperature, but not in a refrigerator or in bright sunlight
- Use EM-5 within max. 1 year
Spray EM-5 alternately with EM-1 or EM-FPE through a hose-end or pressure sprayer. The thought here is to prevent the pests from getting used to or building a tolerance to the same product.
- Spray on plants at 1:500 to 1:1000
- Spray on animals (against tick, flee, mite etc infestation) at a rate of 1 -10%
