How to use EM in ponds & streams
The microorganisms in EM are able to prevent or convert the rot created by the depositing of various types of organic matter such as leaves, algae, pollen, seeds, fish food, etc.
This leads to a natural supply of nutrients, which allows the controlled growth of both pond plants and, above all, phytoplankton (the smallest form of algae).
In turn, such controlled growth supports the development of zooplankton (e.g. daphnia, water fleas, etc.), which represents the main food for numerous other aquatic creatures, and thus creates the basis for a closed and stable life cycle that is essential to the upkeep of any waters.
| Quantity: | As a general rule, a dosage of 1 l of EM-1 or EM-A per 10 m3 of water (0.01%) is employed. In larger volumes of water, as well as certain problem areas, special instructions are generally required. Depending on the size of the pond, a mixture of 1:10,000, i.e. 1 l of EM-1 or EM-A to 10 m3 of water is used and approx. 3-4 kg of ultra fine, alkaline silicate rock meal is stirred into the complete EM-1 or EM-A. In the case of ponds, which are smaller than 40 m2, a ratio of 1:1,000, i.e. 1 l of EM-1 or EM-A to 1 m3 of water should be employed. |

| Method: | The entire mixture is not added to the water in a single dose. Instead it is sprayed on several times (always freshly stir the mixture mentioned above) after mixing in a 1:10 dilution with pond water. If there is no possibility for spraying, a watering can with a finely perforated nozzle should be used. Above all, the plants and the bank areas should be treated until an improvement becomes tangible. If required, this process is then repeated at the most regular intervals possible. EM-X ceramic pipes can also be attached at points where the water is in motion (e.g. aeration), or be submerged in the pond in a jute sack with oat straw, in order to suppress algae growth and to constantly stabilise the water quality. |
| Timing: | The first treatment should take place in spring at a water temperature of over 5°C (prior to initial algae growth). Subsequently, treatments should be repeated regularly on a weekly basis (on the same day). The frequency and the quantity of the EM-1 or EM-A employed, varies according to the quality of the water and environmental conditions. |

The additional use of EM-X ceramic pipes accelerates the decomposition process and hence the improvement in the quality of the water by means of a reduction in the size of the water clusters and thus the water surface tension.
